UPDATE: As promised, the desperately needed v1.01 patch has been released to the public.
"Rockstar Games has released a GTA IV patch for Playstation 3 today that prevents Gamespy's servers from being overloaded and therefore reduces the impact on those servers that were causing the game to stutter and lock up," the studio commented. "This update will ensure that everyone will experience Grand Theft Auto IV the way it was intended. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused."
ORIGINAL STORY: Sony and Rockstar Games have confirmed that a patch for the PlayStation 3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV will be made available at some point later today.
According to Eurogamer, the patch is aimed at improving the online component of the popular crime epic by "reducing the loads on the servers at GameSpy and hopefully the completely random hangs that some users have seen."
The PS3 version has been plagued with multiple issues since launch day, including reports of users having trouble connecting to the multiplayer server to various instances of the game freezing up.
Stay tuned.

Yeah but will it fix the issue with the game hanging on first load? I hope so.
Lets hope this is better tested than the base release ;)
No in all seriousness, to get a patch out in a week is a mightily impressive feat and I suspect that there's been a heck of a lot of people working overtime on this one. Kudos to R* if it all works out well.

I have the fix for you freezes...It 100% worked for me. Please post the following wherever you can:
Create an alternative user for PS3.
Copy the game save from the first user to the second user.
Let the game install under the new user name.
Start the game....bam! Loads with no freeze...just can't go online...but at least you get to play the game.
Did this a week ago....after my game...with more than 10 hours of play would not get passed the load screen. Works perfect. Try it out. Lemme know if it works.
If it does, please post in other forums.
Thanks.

Could not play online until I done the following :- port forwarding
udp 6672 and 28900, tcp 8001 and 27900
start game,go to multiplayer and select custom game.
Pick type of game and then add 2 private slots (friends) start game and now you should be host with very little problems with connection errors

I downloaded the patch and it didn't stop my ps3's (both 20 and 60gb) from freezing. I called rockstar and they told me the patch was not supposed to fix any freezing issues, only to improve the multiplayer. Lame.

I've had no problems with the game, but as I understand it, there are 2 things to do to 'fix' the problems:
1. Make sure you're not connected to the PSN when playing single-player, as posted here on PSU.
2. Simply delete the data the game installs on your HDD (note: NOT your game saves), and let the game re-install the data
From what I've read, either/both of those should resolve the issue.
As for the patch - I wasn't even aware it was available yet. I've just been online with the game, and it didn't say anything about downloading a patch.

come on man your telling me i payed 60dollars to look at a freeze screen i had the game since the 28th of april and ive been trying to complete it ever since, they send out a patch to fix one thing but what about the freeze issues,i or any of my compatriots should'nt have to suffer because we bought a ps3 at launch if any thing we should be appreciated for the support this is bordering on incompetence, sony show some love R* Should not be allowed to put products like this out without getting it right,at the least the ability to put your 60$ game in your 650$ system 850$ with everthing so yeah im pissed this has become an investment,SONY,ROCKSTAR GET YOUR ELPHANT DUMP together.

I thought the freezing HAD to do with online servers...Because it constantly tries to upload you stats or some crap (I don't have the game). Even though you weren't playing m-player, you froze because of the online stats link. That's why signing out of the PSN worked, right? So this patch should fix it, then?! I didn't buy it for 2 reasons. One of them is that Xplatform games suck on the PS3. Looks like I was right.

Glad to see the patch come out, even though I don't have the game yet. I was getting tired of my buddy saying that I should pay $50 a year and I could avoid these problems. Hah.

This patch has not helped me at all, I have been looking forward to playing this game since I bought my ps3 back in Feb of '07. I have tried EVERY "temporary" fix I have been able to find and nothing is working for me. I can play the game for about 2 minutes before the screen freezes and the sound just keeps playing. My internet connection and other features have been disabled and still the same problem. If it is a hardware issue with the 60gb ps3 I think there should be a recall, and Sony should pony up for all of us gamers who jumped on early to buy defective hardware and replace our systems. Unless Rockstar can supply a patch to provide full functionality, and I mean soon.

I know this is late but I have the launch day console (60gig) and i replaced the HDD just a few days before i got GTA IV and ive only had one problem it froze loading the game save. So I shut down the PS3 and then flipped the main power switch off then back on; from the back, then i restarted and i havent had a problem since...Oh BTW the game actually runs pretty good in 1080P.

I'm just curious, but those that are still having problems with the game freezing after installing the new patch. What are the model numbers of ur PS3s? I have a 60gb version model #CECHA01, if you don't know where to find your model number, it's on the back of the PS3, after the serial number. I must have one of the earlier models, because I'm still having problems and am very frustrated.

@ Wise_Guy im not at home right now but i got my PS3 on launch night (was out in the cold in line lol) The way i solved the problem was just to dissconnect the PS3 from the internet, and GTAIV worked perfict. i also turned off the info bar and turned off media server detection.

i played online last night just fine then tonight i applied the patch, since then i cannot play one single online game, says one or more players lost connection returning to single player. thanks for the patch rockstar. i figured out what the patch does, it keeps people from playing online so that the servers aren't congested. that is some fix, at least before i could play a few online games, now not even one.
